Northern Beaches Success Women's Network

Growth in small businesses on Northern Beaches

There are around 30,000 small businesses on the Northern Beaches, with around 30 per cent run by women.

Across the nation, more women are operating home-based businesses and the Northern Beaches is no exception.

The rise in women running SMEs on the Northern Beaches is due to:

  • Women seeking a better work-life balance
  • Growing levels of women with professional skills in the region and
  • Women opting for telecommuting instead of commuting

The growth in home-based businesses on the Northern Beaches, many run by women, has been attributed to: better technology, outsourcing and a growth in service industries.

Of all small businesses on the Northern Beaches, 60 per cent are solo businesses, 10% employ between 1 – 4 people and 3% employed between 5 and 19 employees.

The majority of Northern Beaches small businesses are based in the Warringah area, particularly in Brookvale and Dee Why.

There are a wide range of small businesses on the Northern Beaches including: IT, multi-media, creative, law, accounting and financial services.

There are many benefits from keeping business local. These include the social benefits of women spending more time with their families, environmental benefits of reducing the environmental footprint by reducing commuting, and economic benefits of using and buying local goods and services.

Natalie Moutia and Cindy Steele are supporting women in small businesses on the Northern Beaches. They hold a Northern Beaches Success Women’s Network, which meets monthly at the Harbord Diggers. Meetings are held over lunch from 12.00 to 2.00pm.

“The Northern Beaches lunch is an opportunity for businesswomen with small to medium businesses to meet, network, promote their business, gain contacts and exchange referrals to grow their business in the Northern Beaches area,” Natalie Moutia, Co-founder of the Success Women’s Network, said.

“Networking is proven to be the most cost effective way of marketing for micro and small businesses,” Ms Moutia added.

“Our lunches are relaxed, so women have fun whilst making great business contacts,”  Ms Moutia added.

“At the lunches women can also promote their businesses with marketing materials,  having their own 30 second business commercial or even being the guest speaker,” Ms Moutia said.

Lynda Dyer
Mind Power Global, Northern Beaches

My business, Mind Power Global, takes me around the world. In April last year, I decided I wanted to concentrate on working in Australia.

I was fortunate enough to hear about the Success Women’s Network. I went along to my first lunch in August 2011.

What a breath of fresh air this meeting was!

It was informative. Professional businesswomen laughed and chatted. And everyone cared about what you did and how they could help your business.

It was just what I was looking for. I became a member and went to the lunches promoting my skills as a coach and trainer.  I also assisted the organizers, Cindy Steele and Natalie Moutia, in any way that I could. I truly believed in what the Success Women’s Network does to empower businesswomen. I was happy to be a part of their team whenever required.

We all know that networking is about relationship building. After 6 months I was asked to be part of the Pink Belt Coaching Team. I was honoured to be chosen. The Pink Belt team was launched in 2011 for Success Women’s Network members. The more exposure I got, the more the business came in.

Pink Belt offers a free coaching session to all Success Women’s Network members. 80 per cent of SWN businesswomen wanted more coaching and my business really built up. I am now often booked out, either coaching clients or conducting training sessions, and I love every bit of it.

I believe the more you put into anything, the more you get back and this is truly happening. Success Women’s Network women are inspiring, dedicated, fun and passionate about what they do. It’s a great pleasure to be involved with this network.
